The Impact of Science and Technology Service Industry Agglomeration on
Industrial Upgrading in China

Abstract: Since the reform and opening up, China蒺s science and technology service industry has been developing rapidly.
Science and technology service industry can promote the rise of manufacturing industry to the high鄄end level, but it is still scarce
for the research on the impact of science and technology service industry agglomeration on China蒺s industrial upgrading. By using
the mediation effect analysis method and constructing the spatial weight matrices, based on the panel data of 30 provinces during
the years from 2008 to 2018,this paper tests the influence of science and technology service industry agglomeration on the upgra鄄
ding of industrial structure in China. The research results indicate that the science and technology service industry in various
provinces has a strong spatial correlation. The science and technology service industry agglomeration has a significantly positive
impact on the upgrading of China蒺s industrial structure. It can promote the upgrading of China蒺s industrial structure through labor
productivity. It can promote the upgrading of China蒺s industrial structure through intermediate output and ultimate output in inno鄄
vation output. In the eastern region and the western region, it can promote the upgrading of industrial structure through economic
development. Therefore, policies should be made to promote the agglomeration of science and technology service industry. The
driving effect of science and technology service industry agglomeration on intermediate output and ultimate output should be pro鄄
moted. The integration development of science and technology service industry and manufacturing industry should be promoted.
We should speed up the development of science and technology service industry and establish a benign interaction mechanism a鄄
mong enterprises, universities and scientific research institutions. Due to the fact that foreign investment in the western region
cannot promote the industrial upgrading, the quality of foreign investment should be constantly improved in the western region.
