Manufacturers' exploitative behavior is not uncommon in marketing practices and exerts adverse effects on distributors. However, whether and under what conditions such behavior induces distributors' opportunistic behavior remains underexplored. Based on the theory of reciprocity, this study uses both primary survey data and secondary data to empirically examine the impact of manufacturers' exploitative behavior on distributors' opportunistic behavior and the moderating roles of formal and informal institutional constraints. The results indicate that manufacturers' exploitative behavior has a significant positive impact on distributors' opportunistic behavior, and that both formal institutional constraints (contract specificity and legal policy environment) and informal institutional constraints (shared values and cultural tightness) negatively moderate the positive relationship between manufacturers' exploitative behavior and distributors' opportunistic behavior. Accordingly, manufacturers should fully recognize the negative impact of their exploitative behavior and consciously restrain such behavior. When confronted with manufacturers' exploitative behavior, distributors, in turn, should adopt more legitimate and effective response strategies by leveraging institutional constraints such as contract specificity, legal policy environment, and cultural tightness. Moreover, when shared values with manufacturers are high, distributors should maintain rational judgment and a degree of tolerance toward such exploitative behavior.
