      This article illustrates the background of urban development in the history of cities in the western countries. It makes an analysis on the popular concept of "managing city" and the regeneration of inner-city in the developed countries. It compares the three different strategies of managing city such as "economic-oriented", "environment-based" and "social-centered" approaches.
